Health care is organised and run at the Canton level. Each Canton legislates for and operates its own hospitals, clinics and public-health services.
The Federation legislates only the matters that must be common across the country, under its concurrent powers (Article 54): admission to the medical and allied professions, medicines and medical products, the economic viability of hospitals and hospital charges, and measures to combat epidemics. Where a Canton’s law and the federal law differ, the Canton’s law prevails.
