Christians
The Christians are one of Lebanon’s four founding communities, with their own history, values and way of life.
The Christian canton gathers thirteen of Lebanon’s 18 recognised communities: the twelve Christian ones – Maronite, Greek Orthodox, Greek Catholic (Melkite), Armenian Orthodox, Armenian Catholic, Syriac Orthodox, Syriac Catholic, Latin, Chaldean, Assyrian, Coptic Orthodox and Protestant – and the Jewish community.
A canton may make Armenian an official language (Art. 22-bis).
In the federation, the Christian community governs itself in its own canton – its own laws, schools and reading of history – while sharing one state with the others.
