Democracy

Democracy in the federation is exercised close to the citizens, by elections and by direct votes.

In the municipality and the canton, citizens elect their representatives and vote directly on decisions. Majority rule works best among people who share the same values.

At the federal level, the federation lets each canton govern itself democratically, while protecting every community from another’s majority.
