1926-1943 Centralized Unitary Republic (French Mandate)
In 1926, Greater Lebanon adopted a centralized, unitary constitution, modelled on the French state.
It replaced the bottom-up, multinational order of the Mutasarrifate, and translated “millet” – nation – as “sect”, turning distinct identities into faiths.
Disputes soon followed, starting with the history textbook in 1937; the period ends with independence in 1943.
