An open letter to Pope Leo XIV, written by Iyad Boustany for "the 95% Group" in October 2025, offering what it calls a candid reflection on the state of Lebanon's Christians at a historical juncture. It argues that the Christian ruling elite, whose power depends on the centralized, sect-based power-sharing system, defends the status quo while ordinary Christians despair and emigrate.
In nineteen sections, the letter sets out the author's case: sect as identity rather than faith, the failure of the centralized state, pluralism, subsidiarity and solidarity, sovereignty, and why calls for "citizenship" and "secularism" would, in his view, weaken the communal structures that have protected Christians in the Levant.
This strikes me as remarkably tone deaf unfortunately. Lebanon is too small to be partitioned.
It sounds like a good idea but past its superficial nature, it won’t solve any real problems in the country.
